Over a decade ago, the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra (NBYO) adapted a transformational music education program, “El Sistema”, from Venezuela with the goal of creating social change for young people throughout the province. A program that began in one centre with 50 children, today delivers orchestral music education to more than 1,100 children across 10 centres. Sistema NB is offered in both languages, to First Nations communities, newcomers to Canada and to at-risk youth. With an ambitious goal to double its number of students in the next 15 years, Sistema’s “10,000 Children” campaign strives to lift a generation of New Brunswick children out of poverty. The McCain Foundation is proud to be a long-term supporter of this ground-breaking initiative.
